After choosing your character, selecting your class and skills it is time to enter the world of Dragon Age Origins.
We will start our journey by following a path of a young Magi who is about to attempt the Harrowing – sort of a graduation test from the University of Magic.

awesome guide dude really helped me[=
Little thing to do before even starting the game :
Go play the 2D flash games here :
http://www.dragonagejourneys.com/
It doesn’t take too long and you receive 3 unlockable items.
- Embry’s many pockets (belt): +5% resist to all elements (including spirit and nature)
- Amulet of the war mage : +5% damage to all elements
- Helm of the deep +2 const, +10 mental/physical resistance.
All those 3 items are good at least until level 8. Good to start with.
Didn’t know where to add that, so will add it here : spell combos.
- Freeze an enemy, then use Stone projectile. You shatter the target.
- Ward combo. Use a repulsion ward, then cast a paralysis ward that touches it. Anything in contact with both wards + 1 meter diameter WILL be paralysed for a LONG time (the catch is… your companions and you as well if you’re too close)
Playing as a mage : (elementalist/creationist)
You have two options in elements :
- either go for fire, with a big area damage, good damage, and damage over time + a good bonus to melee weapons for your companions. Don’t take inferno, it is nearly useless in open areas. Although… given the amount of damage it deals, with a combo immobilizing the target, or slowing/stunning a group of enemies… I haven’t tried it.
- OR you go for frost and earth. Good def, a bit of frost for melee companions, AND thh frost + stone projectile shattering combo.
Creation :
- heal ! compulsory.
- wards, for three reasons :
* repulsion ward : great in all enclosed areas. Cast it on a door before opening it. Open, and… Fireball everything indoors. You have the time for two fireballs before any enemy reaches you.
* the ultimate mage fighting spell : a ward that annihilates all magic. Offensively : Target your chosen mage, and it/he/she has no mana/no buffs on it. If you keep it in with, say, a tank… It’s a dead mage. Defensively : have your tank taunt every single mage, cast the ward on him… No spell will reach him. Be aware that healing magic doesn’t work either, so a high threshold for poultices is required in a tactical slot.
* wards combo. Use a repulsion ward, then cast a paralysis ward that touches it. Anything in contact with both wards + 1 meter diameter WILL be paralysed for a LONG time (the catch is… your companions and you as well if you’re too close, beware). No enemy resisted on all the atempts I made.
Forgot to add that persuasion is essential in my opinion for a mage. Since you only need herbalism (and don’t really need it anyway), you can save a lot of time/fights/money by using persuasion. On the plus side, you can sometimes get access to mini quests, with monetary/XP rewards.
AAAAAARGHHHHHHHH ! Time for me to sleep, I forgot another thing…
16 points in cunning is essential, no more. Balance 2/1 points in magic/willpower. No need for the rest, Alistair should be able to take head on anything if you heal him.
you get 5 free cunning in circle tower and 1 more for taking mage therefore you dont need to spend even 1 point on cunning
if skills were saved from beginning then right after sloth demon you can get master coercion
vulnerability hex + drain life/mana drain = improved drain ( twice as effective )
crushing prison + force field = shockwave ( both spells removed + shockwave that harms everyone around target
force field = win, 20 seconds of freezing and invulnerability for friend or foe, helps a lot in both cases, tank + FF then AOE or FF hard enemy(emissary/ogre/boss) while taking off weaker enemies or healing/placing traps and costs 2/3 of paralysis explosion
spell whisp adds 10 spellpower for me.. idk if its really good..
10 spellpower for 30 mana and +5% spell cost for every spell might not worth it
now about your guide
everything from this guide can be found in prima guide which can be easily downloaded from thepiratebay or elsewhere and even though its flawed and there are a lot of things that could be better, your guide is nothing better, i suggest you to get it and try to add things missed in prima guide to yours, like reactions of companions to certain dialogue options, things that can screw your char ((on first play i put talents into heal ->>> mass rejuvenation and grease + flame blast which i found totally useless when i could put them into other spells so i had to restart game after about 10 hrs of playing, also i put alistair on auto-level so after a while he was neither tank nor dmg dealer but i didnt want to change him because of his awesome sense of humor and so on..))
also, where the f*ck is that so-called best armor for mages “robes of magister lords”? i found those magus war boots on trickster whim and i suppose they really are best boots for mages( armor 2.25, fatigue 0.57, +12 def) but oh well.. they made chart with items but didnt show where to get them (xcept those that you can get from shops) =___=…..
Of course you can download Prima Guide which is the official guide for the game but it is illegal. You can buy it on Amazon for $14.61 or £9.14 if you wish. This guide is free.
It is a walkthrough, not a strategy guide. It includes some info on gifts and character interactions but primarily you should use it when you’re stuck in the game and don’t know what to do next (or want to see what choice you have).
And again: the guide is not complete yet.
It would be nice for you to put a little more effort into your walkthrough, though. A few things I read said basically “go talk 2 guy then find item go to nex questt”.
From your post I can see you know how to type effectively.
Not to be a prick, but you know.
Sure, some of the paragraphs are very brief, consider them ‘online drafts’. When the guide will be complete I will reorganize the quest tree, add more links, change the order of certain quests (Chantry Board, Blackstone etc.) and fill the gaps.
Thanks for the support and for posting few alternative solutions.
Hello,
Many thanks for this guide!
I have found it very helpful an occasional spot or question.
Sincerely,
Bouncy
Dude. Eff these pricks who are complaining about your guide. It’s wicked informative. Thanks a lot for the effort.
Great site, has given me a lot of great insight into some of the quests. But you or someone else really needs to go through each article and correct the horrid typos (or the misspellings).
awesome guide this has really help’d me
Very nice job ty for taking the time to help your fellow gamers out like this man
i got stuck acouple places to find out its because they did not allow for completion after you accidentally finish a main quest. kinda sucks.. you really don;t know thats gonna happen when you walk into the wrong room and all of a sudden its over.
i did redcliffe and the mages tower first but when i went to do the dalish stuff larana said id given her the wolfs heart and what a shame it was that zathrian had to die but i wanted to do the dalish stuff
Good stuff. Again, please disregard those with non-helpful criticisms.
Some of the spell combinations in other comments were useful to me, but the core guide was quite thorough for a “work in progress” that is free, over the web.
What Etech said, good that you passed on a lot of info to other folks based on your gaming experience
Amazing site!! thnx for the help ill be on here more i am sure lol
i defeated the blight in the capital of denerim. now all i can do is walk around my partys camp and “sulcher’s pass” i also notice that every single side quest i had taken on during the game and didnt complete is no longer amongst my quests, did anybody else experience this? if so, any suggestions on what i can do? thanks
Great work dude. Really helpful, and above all… it’s free. Thanks for your hard work
I am stuck. I followed the kid’s ghost in the lower ruins. It shows a cut scene where he is crying for his “mommy”, then he runs away, and a gazillion undead show up. Am I supposed to kill them all or is there a way around this? I keep getting my but handed and I cant kill all these addsdd. this game is really pissing me off.
I would like to say this guide really helps me, like the gifts I now have TONS of more side quests with my party members that they unlock…
hello….

I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am stuck on the red cliff mission when the dead ppl waves come at u i killed the first wave and nothing is happining i have search every corner and top to bottom and cant find any thing plz HELP me plz
inside the arl of redcliffs estate before the landsmeet if you become the king/ royal consort and you ask elnora if she needs any thing she hesitates before saying “no”. is there any variance on this? does she ever say yes? it seems like she might.
anyone know if there is a limit to what level you can reach?? im a level 20 now but i want to get higher before i do the final fight. . . .
I am not sure what the lvl cap is but I know it is not 20. I was a level 22 when I fought the archedemon in one of my playthroughs and I was still gaining experience. Just make sure to do all the sidequests and downloadable content that you can and you should get over 20.
Yeah my highest char got to 23 with about a third of the bar filled up after fighting the archdemon.
Is this guide going to be extended to cover Awakening?
Hi, I just wanted to add that it looks like you forgot the Chasind Cache in the Kokari Wilds. It is a quest you get after finding Rigby’s notes and following the Chasind signs. Great guide btw.
