Anvil of the Void

Find Branka in Orthan Taig. You will get there from Caridin’s Cross.

First clue you find is Branka’s Journal.

Branka's Journal

Branka's Journal

Follow her trail into Dead Trenches and fight your way through the bridge all the way to Gates of Bownammar.

After miles of tunnels and corridors you find Hespith, one of Branka’s captains. Go deeper into Bownammar.

You will have to face the Broodmother.

Broodmother

Broodmother

Hint: move right to a narrow path leading up as soon as possible. Defeat the incoming enemies, destroy the tentacles with a ranged weapons and magic, then go down and attack Broodmother. When the enemies reappear repeat the process. You can attack her with area magic (Tempest etc) at all times, the best option is to select a range including her and all tentacles. Also: use lifedrain whenever you can, you can do it from a distance. Some nature resistance might help (salve etc.).

When she’s dead you can travel to Anvil of the Void.

After talking to Branka you will have to face several trials.

First: there is a room filled with gas, start with closing four valves (two on each side of the room), then destroy all the golems. One by one.

Hint: if you’re taking a lot of damage switch all your characters to ranged weapons, select the character that is currently being targetet by the golem and make him chase you in circles while your party deals him damage.

Second: traps. If none of your characters has the ability to disable a trap you will have to trigger them and defeat the golems. Two at a time. (Concentrate only on one of them, destroy him and then finish the other one).

Third: Faces.

Faces

Faces

In this room there is a rotating monument. Destroy a Forgotten Spirit (again, concentrate only on one of them), touch the anvil on the side you want to destroy and you will damage the eyes of the monument. The faces will rotate, make sure you don’t face the face with darkness in the eyes (how poetic, I know..). And so on… Damage each side twice: first time the eyes will change it’s form from electricity to darkness, the second time the face will be blinded.

The door will open and you will meet Caridin the maker of golems.

You have the choice either to Fight Caridin or Branka.

If you defeat Caridin Branka will prepare a crown for the king.

How exactly do you get there from the cross? I’m sure I’ve run around that map 4 times, and with the exception of one chest neither of my rogues can open I’ve found everything… But when I go back to the area map I can’t get to orhtan taig!!

Any help (or screenshot showing what I’m missing) would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Cris says:

its one of the exit icons on the map. They all say the same on the actual map, but if u walk towards one of the exits (cant remember which one), it says Orthan Taig.

  3. Evsie says:

Got it, it’s the bottom right if anyone else is stumbling around… Thanks.

  4. Json says:

Anything special if you dont destroy the anvil?
    Or if you do?

  5. Hapsard says:

If you destroy the anvil you have killed Branka and you will get a little disapproval from Ogren … but he gets over it pretty quick and is after a girl in the Soiled Princess Tavern … the main thing is you have an army of Dwarfs at your disposal in the final battle of Denerim.

If you don’t destroy the anvil you will get big disapproval from any good characters (Allister and Lillianna) … but you get positive approval from Morrigan …. and you get an army of Golems in Denerim.

I thought Branka was a harder fight than Caridin, but I did Branka with a rogue and Caridin with a warrior – so that may have been it.

  6. Hapsard says:

oh … for the record, either paragon gives you a crown to complete the quest no matter what you decide to do.

  7. Cyndi says:

I can’t see how you get into the gates of bownamar – i have re-played the entire deep roads twice now and each time i get to the gates, i see an “x” marking the spot, but the doors are not open and there are no signs of entering the area – any ideas on what i’ve missed?

  8. meanmon13 says:

There is a tunnel to the left (facing the gates)… it wraps around and exits behind

  9. lol says:

you don’t, idiot. you walk around it

  10. turok says:

does it matter if u take shale with u in to anvil of the void or not at all

  11. Paul says:

Cyndi, look more closely at the map, particularly around the North of the large doors. Took me a while to spot it, too.

  12. Talith says:

After you cross the bridge, go all the way left and then hang a right, there is a tunnel leading into the stone that goes behind the gates.

(the gates don’t open as far as I know)

  13. Hal says:

There are tunnels on either side of the gate, or maybe just the left, I only went to the left. And they will take you through to the other side

  14. DankSage says:

i recommend Shale in ur party for this one…

  15. Jenniecide says:

You can’t choose branka if you have shale though or you lose her. I’m not sure if maybe it was something I said during the conversation or not but shale left me. I redid that with caridan later of course and she stayed.

  16. Locker 591 says:

@Jenniecide: Which she??? Shale Or Branka???

No matter who you chose, you still get the dwarven emperor’s crown.
Caradin is harder to kill than Branka.
If you side with branka you have the option of creating a golem army, or still destroying the anvil. branka kills herself later if you opt to destroy it.

The clear and obvious best choice, considering how it affects your party’s disposition, is to side with Caradin.

  18. adam says:

hey guys weres Caridin’s Cross. i cant find it

  19. gamerchick1988 says:

im finding this battle pretty difficult, im wondering if im doing it too early in the game. my characters are levels 13 and 14. what levels were your characters at when you did this battle?

  20. Daniel says:

This battle is insane! I’m level 16 and I can’t beat Branka!

  21. Yudesh says:

I am on level 16 as well – with morrigan, alistair and ohgren and myself (a human warrior) – I keep getting my a$$ handed to me…
Is there someway to put a tactic in place to run to a lyrium vein when health is low – because I am out of health potions…and I don’t have any saved games before entering the anvil, so I am stuck there.

  22. Chris says:

When i chose branka i got 4 golems in the final battle
When i chose Caridan i got 50 dwarves in the final battle

  23. me too says:

I keep getting down to two golems (yellow tags) and Branka, Ogrhen was a surpise and he has shitty armour and weapons but I didn’t know it was going to be forced on me. Kind f a lame part of the game…I have fears that this is it and I’ll never be able to beat these bastards. Tried all sorts of tactics but I don’t have the right party I don’t think.

  24. MIKe says:

to beat branka … firstly you need a mage that knows cone of cold power , its really helpful as golems and branka rarely resist it … first focus on weaker foes, lastly smite branka… always concentrate your attacks on one target

  25. Kellie says:

Lvl 16 and just can’t beat it – anyone else have luck at my level yet?

  26. sid says:

one thing i have noticed (game wide) it does not matter what your level is. the game auto levels the enemy to your current level. the difficulty determines whether they are higher or lower and also the intended difficulty of the fight. ie bosses are meant to be hard so the are often a level or two above you. will the average enemy is a level or two below. there fore it doesn’t mater what level you are but whether or not you have a balanced character and team i suggest 2 warriors 1 archer 1 mage it has the balance of offence and defense required of the harder boss fights

  27. loveless says:

sids right the game does lvl with you but tthe higher the lvl the higher chance of succees. at least in my experience. because at higher lvls u can have higher lvl talents. also i think for best results use 1 rouge 1 warrior 1archer and 1 mage.

  28. JoseyCat says:

Ok so I ran through this with my highest leveled character as Oghren at level 14. I had Alistair, Shale, Oghren and myself (lvl 13 rouge). So I set everyones tactics to target the same enemy I did, summoned a giant poisonous spider and went at it. Took out the golems first by stunning them beating them down and throwing it all down on Branka. Wasn’t too bad and only used 2 of my 5 poultices.

  29. moecow says:

Hmm when I chose Caridan and after he did suicide the door that Branka and me Came out of was locked and i couldn’t open it what should i do and what did i miss.

  30. Reinman says:

Alright, alright…in the Denerim battle, will having golems instead of dwarves or dwarves instead of golems affect how the ending plays out or how easy the gameplay is throughout the battle?

  31. Reinman says:

    and who is Shale?

  32. JoseyCat says:

Shale is the golem you can get by having the Stone Prisoner DLC… If you had bought a new copy of the disk back when it released it would’ve come with the free download code for it. Otherwise you’ll have to buy it.

  33. frustratedascanbe says:

help….plz….someone…i’m desperate…i’m OUTSIDE branka’s trap and can’t get in and continue..i stopped playing a very long time ago cause i couldn’t find help..how do i fucking get in?!?!?!?

  34. TheMage says:

    Me – blood mage/spirit healer. (Level 18)
    Wynne
    Alistair
    Oghren

Keep Branka locked down and take out the golems and then wail on her while healing your party. Not too hard…

I despised Branka and that bad poetry Hespith lunatic. Shut up already!

  35. SkylineGTRguy says:

i need help with fighting the broodmother. i have a lvl12 warrior (me) alister, leliana and ohgren.

  36. Twolf says:

Tip for beating the Broodmother: Use ranged attacks on the Broodmother while using your melee guys to take on the tentacles. Don’t go near the Broodmother herself – she’ll buttrape you senseless. I did it with a rogue, 2 warriors and Morrigan (Winter’s grasp etc. seemed effective).

As or the Callidan fight, I don’t really have any tips. I was level 18 when I took that one on, and I spent ages trying to win it. All I can say is use cone of cold and stock the hell up on health potions. I failed to do the latter, and I paid the price of an hour and a half of trial and error.

If you’re really stuck (have no earlier savegames) you should just cheat temporarily. Better ruining one fight than not bein able to play the rest of the game =)
